Attention Fresh Graduates!

If you are reading this blog, it's because you want some tips on how to land a job. Well, this is it!

  • CREATE A WINNING RESUME
    • How to do it? By being simple. Don't list every seminars you attended because it doesn't really matter. Don't list too many character references because some companies don't really call them. And if you are a working student, include it in your resume. Honestly, working students have a higher chance to be hired immediately.

  • GET A REVIEWER FOR IQ EXAM
    • Reality check...Not all college graduates can pass a simple IQ TEST given by some companies. Even board passers sometimes failed to get a passing score. But why is that? There are so many IQ test online which you can practice in answering. In our company, we only have five (5) questions and out of five, only one question is quite difficult. So getting a passing score is very easy. We tried to give those test on random high school students and they passed. So why can't a college graduate do it?

  • BE SURE YOU ARE QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB
    • What does it mean? Am I not yet qualified even I'm a college graduate already? The answer will depend on your skills and abilities plus your degree.
    • Example 1: Our company is into cargo forwarding and consolidation, so mostly, we hired graduates of Customs Administration courses not Education or Nursing. Why is that? Because graduates non-customs/business related courses would have a hard time understanding the terms used in the business.
    • Example 2: In the shipping industry, FEU is not Far Eastern University. etc.

  • KNOW YOUR WORTH & DON'T EXPECT TOO MUCH
    • Usually, fresh graduates were hired for a minimum salary. As of this writing, the minimum wage for Cebu is Php366 per day.
    • In a month if workdays are from Mondays to Fridays you only have 22 days to work and your salary would be Php8,052 minus the taxes like SSS, Philhealth, HDMF, BIR.
    • If your workdays are from Mondays to Saturdays you'll have 26 days in average and that's Php9,516/month
    • Some companies would pay higher than the minimum wage.
    • Don't expect that because you graduated from college, you'll be be paid more. No, no. Your salary is just the same with high school graduates who were paid with minimum wage. Sometimes, your salary is even lesser from those who worked in SM Department Store or Savemore because their rate is above the minimum per day.
    • Yes, it's upsetting. But it's still nice to have your degree. Once you have the necessary job experience, you'll earn more!
    • And a good performance rating would qualify you for a salary increase or even promotion..

  • BE RESOURCEFUL
    • Before your scheduled interview, do some research about the company especially the office address. It has bad vibe if you'll keep on texting the HR staff to ask where the office is located or it's landmark. Have some effort, please.

  • DON'T BE A NO-SHOW ON YOUR INTERVIEW
    • If you can't come to your interview, then let them know. If it's due to emergency reasons, some companies would reschedule your interview.
